"Bhratanatyam and Beyond opened my eyes to new ways of storytelling through the body, while challenging my rhythm and speed and allowing me to see the fluidity possible in combining contemporary and traditional forms."

“I just wanted to let you know that Newtonbrook's experience with Nova Bhattacharya was AMAZING! She was so patient and positive with my students and was able to show them and explain a wide variety of elements of Classical Indian Dance. She challenged them just enough to keep them from getting bored but worked at a pace where most of my students could feel successful in their attempts to pick up this new dance discipline. Thank you for working to provide this experience for us...it was great.”
Mireille Stapleton (Dance Teacher)

Classical Technique for Contemporary Expression

Specifically created for dancers with training in classical Indian dance styles this workshop takes participants through exercises designed to use classical training as source material for contemporary movement as well as exploring ways to recontextualise classical movement in a contemporary aesthetic. Through the creation, deconstruction and abstraction of phrases dancers will be encouraged to work in a personal and subjective manner to find physical expression in a way that resonates for their training. The repertoire based component will include excerpts from works by Bhattacharya giving the dancers the opportunity to experience a diverse methodology of contemporary creation.

Participants must have training in an Indian classical dance style. This workshop has a minimum requirement of eight hours. It can also be conducted for a full week, four hours a day.

“I was speaking to a few of the participants and we all seem to echo the same sentiments- we love your classes because rather than just showing us the way you choreograph, you asked us questions that helped us start thinking about what our own style was and what we actually wanted to do. Thank you for asking all the right questions.
Aarti Joseph (Participant, DanceIntense)
